Chapter Ten: The World's Wonders; All Are Krishna's Glories
In our last chapter, Lord Krishna shared the most secret knowledge, revealing His true nature. Now, He's going to tell Arjuna something even more amazing: how He is the source of everything wonderful and powerful in the universe! This chapter is like God pulling out a giant photo album and saying, "Look, this is Me! And this is Me too! And that over there? Also Me!"

Krishna Promises More Supreme Secrets¹
Śrī Bhagavān (Bhag-a-vahn), God Himself, began: "Bhūyaḥ eva mahā-bāho śṛṇu me paramam vacaḥ yat te aham prīyamāṇāya vakṣyāmi hita-kāmyayā."¹ He said: "O mighty-armed one, mahā-bāho! Hear again, bhūyaḥ eva śṛṇu, My supreme instruction, me paramam vacaḥ! I, aham, will tell you this, vakṣyāmi, because I think you are very dear to Me, prīyamāṇāya, and for your benefit, hita-kāmyayā."
Dr. Suka Dev's Insight: Paramam vacaḥ means 'supreme instruction.' Krishna is about to reveal something even more amazing and important than what He's already said! And He says it's because Arjuna is prīyamāṇāya—'very dear' to Him. This shows that God shares His deepest secrets with those who love Him.
"Na me viduḥ sura-gaṇāḥ prabhavam na mahā-ṛṣayaḥ aham ādiḥ hi devānām mahā-ṛṣīṇām ca sarvaśaḥ."² "Neither the gods, sura-gaṇāḥ, nor the great sages, mahā-ṛṣayaḥ, know My origin, prabhavam! For I, aham, am certainly, hi, the origin, ādiḥ, of all gods and all great sages, devānām mahā-ṛṣīṇām ca sarvaśaḥ, in all respects!"
"Yaḥ mām ajam anādim ca vetti loka-mahā-īśvaram asammūḍhaḥ saḥ martyeṣu sarva-pāpaiḥ pramucyate."³ "Anyone who knows Me, yaḥ mām vetti, as unborn, ajam, and without beginning, anādim, and as the supreme master of all planets, loka-mahā-īśvaram—that person is undeluded, asammūḍhaḥ! He is released, pramucyate, from all sinful reactions, sarva-pāpaiḥ, among mortals, martyeṣu!"
All Goodness and Being Come From God⁴
Krishna explains that all the different qualities and ways of being in living entities—like intelligence, happiness, fear, nonviolence, and so on—all come directly from Him. He is the ultimate source of everything good and powerful.
"Buddhiḥ jñānam asammohaḥ kṣamā satyam damaḥ śamaḥ sukham duḥkham bhavaḥ abhāvaḥ bhayam ca abhayam eva ca ahiṁsā samatā tuṣṭiḥ tapaḥ dānam yaśaḥ ayaśaḥ bhavanti bhāvāḥ bhūtānām mattaḥ eva pṛthak-vidhāḥ."⁴⁻⁵ "Intelligence, buddhiḥ; knowledge, jñānam; freedom from doubt, asammohaḥ; forgiveness, kṣamā; truthfulness, satyam; control of the senses, damaḥ; control of the mind, śamaḥ; happiness, sukham; distress, duḥkham; birth, bhavaḥ; death, abhāvaḥ; fear, bhayam; and also fearlessness, abhayam eva ca; nonviolence, ahiṁsā; equilibrium, samatā; satisfaction, tuṣṭiḥ; penance, tapaḥ; charity, dānam; fame, yaśaḥ; and infamy, ayaśaḥ—all these different qualities, pṛthak-vidhāḥ bhāvāḥ, of living entities, bhūtānām, certainly, eva, come from Me, mattaḥ, alone!"
Dr. Suka Dev's Insight: This is a huge list of qualities, kids! Krishna is saying that every single good quality, every emotion, even birth and death, everything comes from Him. He is the ultimate source of all qualities in the universe.
"Mahā-ṛṣayaḥ sapta pūrve catvāraḥ manavaḥ tathā mat-bhāvāḥ mānasāḥ jātāḥ yeṣām loke imāḥ prajāḥ."⁶ "The seven great sages, mahā-ṛṣayaḥ sapta, from before, and also, tathā, the four Manus, catvāraḥ manavaḥ (great leaders of mankind)—they were born from My mind, mat-bhāvāḥ mānasāḥ jātāḥ! All the populations, imāḥ prajāḥ, in this world, loke, are from them!"
"Etām vibhūtim yogam ca mama yaḥ vetti tattvataḥ saḥ avikalpena yogena yujyate na atra saṁśayaḥ."⁷ "Anyone who truly knows, yaḥ vetti tattvataḥ, this opulence, etām vibhūtim, and mystic power, yogam, of Mine, mama—he becomes engaged in pure devotion, saḥ avikalpena yogena yujyate, without any doubt, na atra saṁśayaḥ!"
God Is the Source; He Lights His Devotees' Hearts⁸
Krishna proclaims that He is the origin of everything, and everything comes from Him. Those who understand this become devoted to Him. He promises to give special intelligence to His constant devotees, lighting up their hearts with the lamp of knowledge.
"Aham sarvasya prabhavaḥ mattaḥ sarvam pravartate iti matvā bhajante mām budhāḥ bhāva-samanvitāḥ."⁸ "I, aham, am the source of generation, sarvasya prabhavaḥ, of all! Everything, sarvam, emanates from Me, mattaḥ pravartate! Knowing this, iti matvā, the learned, budhāḥ, worship Me, bhajante mām, with great attention, bhāva-samanvitāḥ!"
Dr. Suka Dev's Insight: This is a foundational verse, kids! Aham sarvasya prabhavaḥ means 'I am the source of everything.' It's like saying, "I am the ultimate origin, the beginning of all beginnings!" And those who know this serve Him with bhāva-samanvitāḥ—'great attention' or 'deep feeling.'
"Mat-cittāḥ mat-gata-prāṇāḥ bodhayantaḥ parasparam kathayantaḥ ca mām nityam tuṣyanti ca ramanti ca."⁹ "Their minds are fully engaged in Me, mat-cittāḥ! Their lives are devoted to Me, mat-gata-prāṇāḥ! They preach to each other, bodhayantaḥ parasparam, and talk about Me, kathayantaḥ ca mām, constantly, nityam! And they become pleased, tuṣyanti ca, and enjoy transcendental bliss, ramanti ca!"
"Teṣām satata-yuktānām bhajatām prīti-pūrvakam dadāmi buddhi-yogam tam yena mām upayānti te."¹⁰ "To them, teṣām, who are always engaged, satata-yuktānām, in rendering devotional service with loving ecstasy, bhajatām prīti-pūrvakam—I, aham, give real intelligence, dadāmi buddhi-yogam tam, by which they come to Me, yena mām upayānti te!"
"Teṣām eva anukampā-artham aham ajñāna-jam tamaḥ nāśayāmi ātma-bhāva-sthaḥ jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā."¹¹ "To show them special mercy, teṣām eva anukampā-artham, I, aham, dispel the darkness, tamaḥ nāśayāmi, born of ignorance, ajñāna-jam! I do this by sitting within their hearts, ātma-bhāva-sthaḥ, with the glowing lamp of knowledge, jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā!"
Dr. Suka Dev's Insight: This is a beautiful image, kids! Krishna isn't just a distant God; He promises to light up the hearts of His devotees like a glowing lamp, jñāna-dīpena bhāsvatā, chasing away the darkness of confusion!
Arjuna Praises Krishna and Asks for His Glories¹²
Arjuna, now fully convinced and amazed by Krishna's words, begins to praise Him as the ultimate truth. He confirms what all the great sages have said about Krishna's supreme nature and then asks Krishna to describe even more of His divine opulences in detail, because hearing about Him never brings satisfaction.
"Arjunaḥ uvāca: param brahma param dhāma pavitram paramam bhavān puruṣam śāśvatam divyam ādi-devam ajam vibhum āhuḥ tvām ṛṣayaḥ sarve deva-ṛṣiḥ nāradaḥ tathā asitaḥ devalaḥ vyāsaḥ svayam ca eva bravīṣi me."¹²⁻¹³ Arjuna said: "You, bhavān, are the supreme truth, param brahma! You are the supreme sustenance, param dhāma! You are the purest, pavitram paramam! All sages, ṛṣayaḥ sarve, say that You are the eternal, śāśvatam, divine, divyam, original Lord, ādi-devam, unborn, ajam, and greatest, vibhum! Even the sage among the gods, Narada, and also Asita, Devala, and Vyasa, svayam ca eva, say this! And You Yourself, bravīṣi me, are telling me this!"
"Sarvam etat ṛtam manye yat mām vadasi keśava na hi te bhagavan vyaktim viduḥ devāḥ na dānavāḥ."¹⁴ "O Krishna, Keśava! I accept all this, sarvam etat ṛtam manye, as truth, ṛtam, which You are telling me, yat mām vadasi! Indeed, hi, O God, bhagavan, neither the gods, devāḥ, nor the demons, dānavāḥ, can know Your manifestation, na te vyaktim viduḥ!"
"Svayam eva ātmanā ātmānam vettha tvam puruṣa-uttama bhūta-bhāvana bhūta-īśa deva-deva jagat-pate."¹⁵ "O greatest of all persons, puruṣa-uttama! O origin of everything, bhūta-bhāvana! O Lord of everything, bhūta-īśa! O Lord of all gods, deva-deva! O Lord of the entire universe, jagat-pate! You yourself, svayam eva, know Yourself, ātmanā ātmānam vettha!"
"Vaktum arhasi aśeṣeṇa divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ yābhiḥ vibhūtibhiḥ lokān imān tvam vyāpya tiṣṭhasi."¹⁶ "You alone deserve to describe, vaktum arhasi aśeṣeṇa, in full detail, Your divine opulences, divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ! Tell me by what opulences, yābhiḥ vibhūtibhiḥ, You remain pervading, vyāpya tiṣṭhasi, all these planets, lokān imān!"
"Katham vidyām aham yogin tvām sadā paricintayan keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu cintyaḥ asi bhagavan mayā."¹⁷ "O supreme mystic, yogin! How shall I know You, katham vidyām aham tvām, by always thinking of You, sadā paricintayan? O God, bhagavan, in what particular manifestations, keṣu keṣu ca bhāveṣu, are You to be remembered by me, cintyaḥ asi mayā?"
"Vistareṇa ātmanaḥ yogam vibhūtim ca janārdana bhūyaḥ kathaya tṛptiḥ hi śṛṇvataḥ na asti me amṛtam."¹⁸ "O Janardana, janārdana! Please describe again, bhūyaḥ kathaya, in detail, vistareṇa, Your mystic power, yogam, and opulences, vibhūtim! Indeed, hi, my satisfaction, tṛptiḥ, in hearing this nectar, amṛtam, is never enough, śṛṇvataḥ na asti me!"
God Is the Best in Everything¹⁹
Krishna agrees to tell Arjuna about His main opulences, emphasizing there's no end to them. He then lists Himself as the best or essence of various categories, showing how He is the ultimate excellence in every single thing in the universe.
"Śrī-bhagavān uvāca: hanta te kathayiṣyāmi divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ prādhānyataḥ kuru-śreṣṭha na asti antaḥ vistarasya me."¹⁹ "Lord Krishna said: 'Yes, hanta, O best of the Kurus, kuru-śreṣṭha! I shall speak to you, te kathayiṣyāmi, about My divine personal opulences, divyāḥ hi ātma-vibhūtayaḥ, which are principal, prādhānyataḥ! There is no limit, na asti antaḥ, to the extent of My manifestations, vistarasya me!'"
Dr. Suka Dev's Insight: Divyāḥ ātma-vibhūtayaḥ (div-yah aat-ma-vib-hoo-ta-yah) means 'divine personal opulences.' This is what this chapter is all about, kids! Krishna is going to tell us about all the amazing ways His greatness shines through everything. He's saying He's the very best, the most powerful, the smartest, the most beautiful, in every single category!
"Aham ātmā guḍākeśa sarva-bhūta-āśaya-sthitaḥ aham ādiḥ ca madhyam ca bhūtānām antaḥ eva ca."²⁰ "O Arjuna, guḍākeśa (meaning 'one who has conquered ignorance')! I, aham, am the soul, ātmā, situated within the heart, āśaya-sthitaḥ, of all living entities, sarva-bhūta! I am also, ca, the origin, ādiḥ, the middle, madhyam, and certainly, eva ca, the end, antaḥ, of all living entities, bhūtānām!"
"Ādityānām aham viṣṇuḥ jyotiṣām raviḥ aṁśu-mān marīciḥ marutām asmi nakṣatrāṇām aham śaśī."²¹ "Among the Adityas (a group of gods), ādityānām, I, aham, am Vishnu, viṣṇuḥ! Among all luminaries, jyotiṣām, I am the radiant sun, raviḥ aṁśu-mān! Among the Maruts (wind gods), marutām, I am Marici, marīciḥ! Among the stars, nakṣatrāṇām, I, aham, am the moon, śaśī!"
"Vedānām sāma-vedaḥ asmi devānām asmi vāsavaḥ indriyāṇām manaḥ ca asmi bhūtānām asmi cetanā."²² "Among all the Vedas, vedānām, I am the Sama Veda, sāma-vedaḥ! Among all the gods, devānām, I am Indra (Vasava), vāsavaḥ! Among all the senses, indriyāṇām, I am the mind, manaḥ! And among all living entities, bhūtānām, I am the living force, cetanā!"
"Rudrāṇām śaṅkaraḥ ca asmi vitta-īśaḥ yakṣa-rakṣasām vasūnām pāvakaḥ ca asmi meruḥ śikhariṇām aham."²³ "Among all the Rudras (forms of Shiva), rudrāṇām, I am Shankara (Lord Shiva), śaṅkaraḥ! I am the lord of wealth, vitta-īśaḥ, among the Yakṣas and Rakṣasas! Among the Vasus (a group of gods), vasūnām, I am fire, pāvakaḥ! And among all mountains, śikhariṇām, I, aham, am Mount Meru, meruḥ!"
"Purodhasām ca mukhyam mām viddhi pārtha bṛhaspatim senānīnām aham skandaḥ sarasām asmi sāgaraḥ."²⁴ "O son of Pritha, pārtha! Among all priests, purodhasām, know Me as the chief, mukhyam mām viddhi, Brihaspati! Among all commanders, senānīnām, I am Skanda (Karttikeya)! And among all reservoirs of water, sarasām, I am the ocean, sāgaraḥ!"
"Mahā-ṛṣīṇām bhṛguḥ aham girām asmi ekam akṣaram yajñānām japa-yajñaḥ asmi sthāvarāṇām himālayaḥ."²⁵ "Among the great sages, mahā-ṛṣīṇām, I am Bhrigu, bhṛguḥ! Among all vibrations, girām, I am the single syllable Om, ekam akṣaram! Among sacrifices, yajñānām, I am the chanting of holy names, japa-yajñaḥ! And among immovable things, sthāvarāṇām, I am the Himalayan mountains, himālayaḥ!"
Dr. Suka Dev's Insight: Japa-yajñaḥ (ja-pa-yag-nya) is super important, kids! It means 'the sacrifice of chanting.' Krishna is saying that chanting God's names is the very best kind of sacrifice, even better than big fire ceremonies!
"Aśvatthaḥ sarva-vṛkṣāṇām deva-ṛṣīṇām ca nāradaḥ gandharvāṇām citrarathaḥ siddhānām kapilaḥ muniḥ."²⁶ "Among all trees, sarva-vṛkṣāṇām, I am the banyan tree, aśvatthaḥ! Among all the sages among the gods, deva-ṛṣīṇām, I am Narada, nāradaḥ! Among the Gandharvas (heavenly singers), gandharvāṇām, I am Chitraratha! And among all who are perfected, siddhānām, I am Kapila Muni!"
"Uccaiḥśravasam aśvānām viddhi mām amṛta-udbhavam airāvatam gaja-indrāṇām narāṇām ca nara-adhipam."²⁷ "Know Me, viddhi mām, as Ucchaiḥśravā, uccaiḥśravasam, among horses, aśvānām, who was born from the churning of the ocean, amṛta-udbhavam! I am Airavata, airāvatam, among lordly elephants, gaja-indrāṇām! And among human beings, narāṇām, I am the king, nara-adhipam!"
"Āyudhānām aham vajram dhenūnām asmi kāma-dhuk prajanaḥ ca asmi kandarpaḥ sarpāṇām asmi vāsukiḥ."²⁸ "Among all weapons, āyudhānām, I am the thunderbolt, vajram! Among cows, dhenūnām, I am the Surabhi cow, kāma-dhuk (ka-ma-dhuk)—meaning 'the cow that fulfills all desires'! I am Cupid, kandarpaḥ, the cause for begetting children, prajanaḥ! And among serpents, sarpāṇām, I am Vasuki, vāsukiḥ!"
"Anantaḥ ca asmi nāgānām varuṇaḥ yādasām aham pitṝṇām aryamā ca asmi yamaḥ saṁyamatām aham."²⁹ "I am Ananta, anantaḥ, among the many-hooded serpents, nāgānām! I am Varuna, varuṇaḥ, among all aquatics, yādasām! Among the ancestors, pitṝṇām, I am Aryama, aryamā! And among all regulators, saṁyamatām, I am Yama, yamaḥ!"
"Prahlādaḥ ca asmi daityānām kālaḥ kalayatām aham mṛgāṇām ca mṛga-indraḥ aham vainateyaḥ ca pakṣiṇām."³⁰ "I am Prahlada, prahlādaḥ, among the demons, daityānām! I am Time, kālaḥ, among all subduers, kalayatām! Among animals, mṛgāṇām, I am the lion, mṛga-indraḥ! And among birds, pakṣiṇām, I am Garuda, vainateyaḥ!"
"Pavanaḥ pavatām asmi rāmaḥ śastra-bhṛtām aham jhaṣāṇām makaraḥ ca asmi srotasām asmi jāhnavī."³¹ "I am the wind, pavanaḥ, among all that purifies, pavatām! I am Rama, rāmaḥ, among the carriers of weapons, śastra-bhṛtām! Among all fish, jhaṣāṇām, I am the shark, makaraḥ! And among flowing rivers, srotasām, I am the Ganges, jāhnavī!"
"Sargāṇām ādiḥ antaḥ ca madhyam ca eva aham arjuna adhyātma-vidyā vidyānām vādaḥ pravadatām aham."³² "O Arjuna, arjuna! I am the beginning, ādiḥ, the end, antaḥ, and also, eva ca, the middle, madhyam, of all creations, sargāṇām! Among all types of education, vidyānām, I am spiritual knowledge, adhyātma-vidyā! And among all arguments, pravadatām, I am the natural conclusion, vādaḥ!"
"Akṣarāṇām a-kāraḥ asmi dvandvaḥ sāmāsikasya ca aham eva akṣayaḥ kālaḥ dhātā aham viśvataḥ-mukhaḥ."³³ "Among letters, akṣarāṇām, I am the first letter 'A', a-kāraḥ! Among compounds, sāmāsikasya, I am the dual compound, dvandvaḥ! I am indeed, eva, eternal time, akṣayaḥ kālaḥ! I am the creator, dhātā, and Brahma, viśvataḥ-mukhaḥ!"
"Mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraḥ ca aham udbhavaḥ ca bhaviṣyatām kīrtiḥ śrīḥ vāk ca nārīṇām smṛtiḥ medhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā."³⁴ "I am all-devouring death, mṛtyuḥ sarva-haraḥ! And I am the generation, udbhavaḥ, of future manifestations, bhaviṣyatām! Among women, nārīṇām, I am fame, kīrtiḥ, beauty, śrīḥ, fine speech, vāk, memory, smṛtiḥ, intelligence, medhā, firmness, dhṛtiḥ, and patience, kṣamā!"
"Bṛhat-sāma tathā sāmnām gāyatrī chandasām aham māsānām mārga-śīrṣaḥ aham ṛtūnām kusuma-ākaraḥ."³⁵ "I am the Brihat-sama among the Sama Veda songs, bṛhat-sāma tathā sāmnām! Among all poetry, chandasām, I am the Gayatri hymns, gāyatrī! Among months, māsānām, I am Margashirsha (November-December), mārga-śīrṣaḥ! And among all seasons, ṛtūnām, I am spring, kusuma-ākaraḥ!"
"Dyūtam chalayatām asmi tejaḥ tejasvinām aham jayaḥ asmi vyavasāyaḥ asmi sattvam sattva-vatām aham."³⁶ "Among all cheats, chalayatām, I am gambling, dyūtam! I am the splendor, tejaḥ, of everything splendid, tejasvinām! I am victory, jayaḥ! I am adventure, vyavasāyaḥ! And I am the strength, sattvam, of the strong, sattva-vatām!"
"Vṛṣṇīnām vāsudevaḥ asmi pāṇḍavānām dhanaṁjayaḥ munīnām api aham vyāsaḥ kavīnām uśanā kaviḥ."³⁷ "Among the Vrishnis, vṛṣṇīnām, I am Vasudeva (Krishna in Dvaraka)! Among the Pandavas, pāṇḍavānām, I am Arjuna, dhanaṁjayaḥ! Among the sages, munīnām, I am Vyasa, vyāsaḥ! And among all great thinkers, kavīnām, I am Ushana, uśanā kaviḥ!"
"Daṇḍaḥ damayatām asmi nītiḥ asmi jigīṣatām maunam ca eva asmi guhyānām jñānam jñāna-vatām aham."³⁸ "I am punishment, daṇḍaḥ, among all means of suppression, damayatām! I am morality, nītiḥ, among those who seek victory, jigīṣatām! I am silence, maunam, among secrets, guhyānām! And among the wise, jñāna-vatām, I am knowledge, jñānam!"
"Yat ca api sarva-bhūtānām bījam tat aham arjuna na tat asti vinā yat syāt mayā bhūtam cara-acaram."³⁹ "O Arjuna, arjuna! Whatever is the seed, bījam, of all creations, sarva-bhūtānām, that also, yat ca api, I am, aham! There is nothing, na tat asti, moving or nonmoving, cara-acaram, that can exist, syāt, without Me, vinā mayā bhūtam!"
God's Glories Are Endless; He Pervades All⁴⁰
Krishna reiterates that there is no limit to His divine opulences and that what He has spoken is just an example. He concludes by stating that He pervades the entire universe with just a single fragment of His being.
"Na antaḥ asti mama divyānām vibhūtīnām param-tapa eṣaḥ tu uddeśataḥ proktaḥ vibhūteḥ vistaraḥ mayā."⁴⁰ "O conqueror of the enemies, param-tapa! There is no limit, na antaḥ asti, to My divine opulences, mama divyānām vibhūtīnām! What has been spoken, eṣaḥ tu proktaḥ, by Me, mayā, is just an example, uddeśataḥ, of My vast manifestations, vibhūteḥ vistaraḥ!"
"Yat yat vibhūti-mat sattvam śrī-mat ūrjitam eva vā tat tat eva avagaccha tvam mama tejaḥ aṁśa-sambhavam."⁴¹ "Whatever existence, yat yat sattvam, is glorious, vibhūti-mat, beautiful, śrī-mat, or powerful, ūrjitam eva vā—you must know, tat tat eva avagaccha tvam, that all those are born from a mere part, aṁśa-sambhavam, of My splendor, mama tejaḥ!"
"Atha vā bahunā etena kim jñātena tava arjuna viṣṭabhya aham idam kṛtsnam eka aṁśena sthitaḥ jagat."⁴² "Or, atha vā, what is the use of knowing many such details, bahunā etena kim jñātena, for you, tava, O Arjuna, arjuna? I, aham, am situated, sthitaḥ, pervading, viṣṭabhya, this entire universe, idam kṛtsnam jagat, with just one fragment, eka aṁśena, of Myself!"
Wow, kids! What an incredible chapter! Lord Krishna truly opened our eyes to His amazing presence everywhere and in everything. He's the very best of all qualities, the source of all power, and He lists so many examples to help us understand. The biggest secret? He holds the entire universe with just a tiny part of His being!
